The Coyote is an amazing animal, a native species originally to North America, its territory has grown massively because of its singular ability to adapt. As mesopredators, just below apex predators (like wolves and bears) they have a healthy fear that has led them to innovative ways of survival. Dubbed the “prairie wolf” they were reviled as much as the wolf and hunted mercilessly, which continues to this day. However, hunting coyotes breaks their family structure (they mate for life) increasing stress causing fluctuations in hormones that can cause coyote females to have up to 17 pups, instead of the usual litter.

From the streets of LA, to the deserts of the Southwest, forests of the Rocky Mountains and flat plains of the mid-west, the Coyote is well known, well loved and well hated.  In folklore Coyote is often a trickster, or fallen from grace, capable of both great wit and great folly - a reminder of our own humanness.

Coyote wears a third eye in this piece, an ability to see through time knowing it can overcome any obstacle and adapt to any landscape.

To help protect Coyote, and other wildlife, 10% of proceeds from this original relief engraving will go to Project Coyote, “protecting wild carnivores, fostering thriving ecosystems”.

This piece is a "relief engraving.” It is in the block print or relief family of printmaking, which refers to two surfaces, one lower than the other, so that the highest surface prints. I hand carve each image with small but tough tools called burins, or gravers. The remaining surface is rolled with ink and pressed through the printing press. Each print taken from the plate is part of an edition, and numbered. My limited editions are always under 100 since they are inked and cranked by hand on my printing press.  Printed on 100% Cotton Rag Paper.
