Indian Elephant

Elephants are incredible creatures who remember the dead, have been observed in altruistic acts, and play just for the fun of it, all signs of highly intelligent mammals. I had the chance to observe these creatures on a life changing trip to Thailand, where I stayed on an elephant preserve. It was acres upon acres of wild lands where working or abused elephants could retire in peace. I was able to sketch and observe  these animals.  I had many elephants filling my sketchbook when I took a trip to a museum in town and drew a pattern from a vase inside one of these elephants. It completed the piece and was a lovely memory of my experience in Thailand with these incredible animals.

Artwork is 9"x12" mixed media collage and relief engraving on cotton rag paper.

Product Info

This piece is a "mixed media relief engraving.” The main image is in the block print or relief family of printmaking, which refers to two surfaces, one lower than the other, so that the highest surface prints. I hand carve each image with small but tough tools called burins, or gravers. The remaining surface is rolled with ink and pressed through the printing press.

I combine mixed media (collage, colored pencil, watercolor, goldleaf, etc) into each piece. This is a mixed media edition of 3, the print you recieve may vary slightly from the one pictured.
