Tips for attending!
Sunscreen and Water! Safety first, often the days are long and the sun can be brutal in open areas like a field or on top of hot concrete. Remember to bring a refillable water bottle, you can often fill up on site, or ask a vendor where to fill up - we need water all day! Sunscreen is sometimes available at the information tent if you forget.
BRING CASH! Artists love cash since credit card processing fees markedly rose this year across the board. Cash helps keep your money in the local economy as artists will spend it on food, local stores, or other artists!
Be a smart customer! Artists often get tired of answering the same 4 questions, so look for posted information about their process, where they are from, what inspires their work, etc, and then ask a creative follow up question that shows you read their info!
Don't haggle! I find it funny how many people believe they can haggle with an artist, when they would never work an hour of their job for free! Artists work hard, it is important to respect that.
It is ok to tell them your price range and see what they can come up with, or if you plan on purchasing more than one piece would they have a discount available. I always feel good giving a small discount to someone who deserves it (like teachers!) or after a long conversation about the piece and its meaning. However, I often feel taken advantage of if someone leads with "will you discount this?" or "will you do $$$?" Without taking the time to understand the concept or process, the answer will be "NO" every time!
Have fun! Art is essential in our human lives, we need to feel the joy of creativity wether we created the work or are just appreciating it! Smile, laugh, and have a great time at the festival, just your being there is supporting the arts!
